NatWest

In light of the current economic crisis brought on by the pandemic, coupled with the increase in home working, the drive for sustainable homes is on the rise – for comfort, self-sufficiency, and a lower financial burden in the future.

I contracted for the Shoreditch-based agency Motive Create, where I was tasked with leading the design on NatWest’s Green Plan. This handy web tool and online marketplace is designed to help customers make their homes and lifestyles more affordable and eco-friendly, while delivering on NatWest’s ambition to be the UK’s leading bank in the fight against climate change.

Energy consumption tracking

Enabling users to track their energy consumption (either via an API through third-party smart home devices, like Nest, or by manual input from the user), set reduction goals, and compare their progress to the wider Green Plan community.

Goal alerts

Keeping the user updated on their target progress via text message, email, and in-app notifications for full visibility.

Greener living tips

Daily challenges with pearls of eco-living wisdom to help guide the user on their savings journey.

Community data

Enabling users to track their energy consumption and compare their progress with other homes in their community and nationwide.

Open banking account aggregation

As well as sustainability features, we also pitched open banking integration to NatWest. The idea is to bring all of the customer’s bank (and reward) accounts under one roof, including accounts with other banks, giving them a holistic view of their finances and automatically rewarding them with NatWest points for every purchase.

Community goals and values

Encouraging the user to set their goals and values, to better understand their spending habits and connect them with merchants and tradespeople who share their ethics.

Eco marketplace

The marketplace portal, where the user can browse local, trusted goods and services.

EPC calculator

By inviting the user to enter their postcode and run an independent EPC rating check to calculate their home’s potential, NatWest could then push tailored offers and services to help the user achieve this.

Gamification

Meet Lolly, the Green Homes mascot whose condition is linked to your home’s energy consumption. Stay within your target to keep Lolly happy – use too much, and Lolly melts.

Green Plan marketplace

The Marketplace portal itself, where the user can browse eco products and certified local tradespeople.

“The speed and quality of Ben's output is sensational. He has been a key pillar in our proposition work this year, and an absolute pleasure to work with. It won’t be the same without him; thank you, Ben!”
